Can solar panels go on a slate roof?

Yes. Natural slate is one of the most common roofing materials on older Scottish housing stock, and it takes solar perfectly well when it is mounted correctly. The panels themselves do not care what is underneath them. What matters is how the mounting brackets are fixed to the roof, because slate behaves differently to the concrete or clay interlocking tiles most modern solar mounting systems are designed around.

On a slate roof, an installer either uses slate hooks that slide under the course above and hang the mounting rail without drilling through the slate face, or lifts and temporarily removes the slates at each fixing point, fits the bracket to the batten or rafter below, and reinstates the slate (sometimes with a replacement) around it. Both are established, standard methods. The wrong method is treating slate like a concrete tile roof and clamping straight over it, which is where problems start.

What is the brittle-tile problem with slate, and how do proper installers handle it?

Slate is thinner and more brittle than concrete tile, and it ages. A slate that has been on a roof for decades can crack under a standard tile clamp or under careless foot traffic during installation, and a cracked slate means a leak that shows up months later, not on the day.

Proper practice is to plan the fixing points before anyone goes on the roof, use slate hooks or a lift-and-refit approach at each point rather than clamps, keep spare matching or close-matching slates on hand for any that do crack during the work, and use roof ladders and staging to spread weight instead of walking directly on the slate. None of this is exotic. It is simply the difference between an installer who mounts panels on all sorts of roofs every week and one who is used to modern estates and has not adapted the method.

What about granite and stone houses in Aberdeen?

Granite and stone-built houses are common across Aberdeen and the north east, and the good news is that the roof structure on these properties is usually the easy part of the job. Traditional stone houses were generally built with solid, well-specified roof timbers, and the roof covering (often slate here too) behaves the same way as slate anywhere else: hooks or careful tile handling, not clamps.

Being told no on a specific roof is not the same as being told solar will not work for you. Often it means fixing the roof first, or finding a different roof face or an outbuilding that suits better. Honesty on this at survey stage, before any commitment, is the point.

What happens at survey on a traditional or older roof?

A survey on a slate, granite, or older stone property covers the same ground as any solar survey, with extra attention to roof material and condition. That means checking the slate or roof covering for wear, cracked or slipped tiles, and general condition; assessing the roof timbers and structure where accessible; confirming orientation, pitch, and any shading from dormers, chimneys, or nearby trees or buildings; and, where the property sits in a conservation area or is listed, checking the planning position before any commitment is made.

The survey is also where the mounting method gets decided (hooks versus lift-and-refit for slate, for example) and where scaffolding and access needs get scoped properly, so the quote reflects the real job rather than a generic one.
