Every installer says they're trusted. No register ranks solar companies, so "best" is always marketing — including when we say it, which is why we don't. What actually protects you is verifiable: certifications, insurance, written guarantees and measured output. Here are the seven checks that separate a solid solar installer from a slick brochure, with our own numbers on every register so you can run the checks on us right now.
The Seven Checks Before You Sign Anything
Run these on any installer quoting for your roof — us included. Every "check us" line below links to the public register, not to our own website.
MCS certification (non-negotiable)
MCS is the certification scheme UK solar installation quality hangs on. Without an MCS-certified install you cannot register for smart export payments, and many insurers and lenders will not recognise the system. Search the installer's company name on the MCS register — takes under a minute.
Which? Trusted Trader status
Which? assesses trading practices, paperwork and customer service before endorsing a business, and their code gives you access to independent dispute resolution if anything goes wrong. Look the company up on the Which? Trusted Traders directory by name.
RECC membership
The Renewable Energy Consumer Code governs how solar is sold: honest quotes, deposit protection rules and a proper complaints route. If an installer is not on the RECC register, the consumer protections you would expect may simply not apply.
TrustMark registration
TrustMark is the government-endorsed quality scheme for work in and around the home. It is another independent register you can search by company name in seconds.
Insurance that is actually big enough
Scaffolding, working at height and live electrical work carry real risk. Ask any installer for their insurance certificates and the numbers on them. Ours: £10,000,000 employers' liability, £2,000,000 public liability and £250,000 professional indemnity — ask us for the certificates and we will send them.
Guarantees in writing, backed by insurance
A verbal promise is worth the paper it isn't written on. Look for deposit protection from the day you pay, a workmanship guarantee backed by independent insurance rather than just the company's word, and any performance promise as a written document, not a sales line. Real measured output, not brochure numbers

There is no official answer, and you should be wary of anyone who claims the title. No regulator or register ranks solar installers. What you can do is verify: is the company MCS certified, are they on the Which? Trusted Trader, RECC and TrustMark registers, do they carry serious insurance, do they put guarantees in writing, and can they show you measured output from real local installs? Any installer worth your roof will welcome those questions. Our registration numbers are all on this page so you can start by checking us.
Go to the MCS website's "find an installer" search and type the company's registered name. The register shows their certificate number and what they are certified for. It takes under a minute and it is the single most important check — without MCS certification you cannot register for smart export payments on your new system.
As a benchmark: employers' liability (a legal requirement), public liability that covers domestic roof and electrical work, and professional indemnity for the design work. Ours are £10,000,000, £2,000,000 and £250,000 respectively, and we will send the certificates to anyone who asks.
Three things. Proof your deposit is protected from the day you pay it. A workmanship guarantee backed by independent insurance, not just the company's own promise. And if the installer makes any claim about how the system will perform, that claim in writing with the method spelled out. If any of the three is missing or verbal-only, treat it as a red flag.
Ask which exact panels, inverter and battery you are getting, by model name. Ask who handles the grid application and the MCS paperwork. Ask what happens if the roof needs repairs first. Ask how scaffolding is arranged and whether it is in the price. And ask to see measured generation from a real local install, not a projection. A good surveyor will enjoy answering; a bad one will change the subject.
